Donation and Transplant Community celebrates long-awaited milestone!

A goal set by Donate Life America and the donation and transplant community in 2006 was achieved this month.  One hundred million peole in the United States are now reported as registered organ, eye and tissue donors through state donor registries.  The milestone is a testament to our human nature and our willingness to work together for the greater good, even at times of great national trial.  As we celebrate this achievement, the need for transplants continues to rise.  More than 112,000 men, women and children nationawide await lifesaving organ transplants today.  Thousands more await needed tissue transplants to resume their normal lives.  A surge in the number of donors is necessary to continue saving more lives.  You are encouraged to register as a donor by visiting www.yesidaho.org

For the clubs of MD39W there are multiple opportunites to give back to your communities this holiday season in the form of wheel chair ramps.  Several individuals are in need of the man-power and know-how to get the job done!  If your club would like to participate please contact Edie at (208) 338-5466 or at edie@idaholions.org.

The Lions Mobile Health Screening Unit screened over 14,000 children and adults for blood pressure, vision, diabetes and hearing. We screened over forty percent of our MD 39 school districts. The volunteer screeners found over 5,700 individuals with screening results outside of normal ranges. We helped them seek further medical attention while providing awareness and education.

The Foundation helps the financially disadvantaged acquire eye surgeries and hearing aids. Personal Assistance Director, Edie Beskoon, reviewed over 150 applications for financial assistance this year. The applications come from all over our Multiple District. From Soda Springs- to Salmon- to Riggins- to Ontario, Oregon and everywhere in between. The Foundation expended over $64,000 to 68 individuals in MD 39. We all had a big part in sustaining our communities by helping these disadvantaged individuals, allowing them to be productive citizens.

Our Lions Clubs collected over 23,000 pairs of eyeglasses this year. The glasses were sorted and shipped around the world by our eyeglass recycling chairman and new Foundation Trustee, Henry Cardinal, Lion Liz Cardinal and Mr. Lion Bill Hallock.

The Idaho Lions Eye Bank recovered eyes from 215 humanitarian individuals in Idaho and Eastern Oregon. The Eye Bank processed 293 corneas for transplant surgeries in Idaho, the United States and the world to individuals afflicted with blindness. Thank you to our donors and their families, Yes Idaho Coalition, and our Technical Director, Edwin Marshall, his staff of seven and 70 contractors who exemplify a passion for sight restoration. The future of eye banking will remain strong in Idaho. The “Yes Idaho” coalition will be hiring three part time individuals to promote organ, eye, and tissue awareness in the state and the coalition office will be housed at the Lions Foundation on Cole road in Boise. Executive Director, Jay Lugo, was elected to the Board of Directors for the Eye Bank Association of America based out of Washington D.C. The two year term started July 1. It is the first time in the 50 year history of the Association that someone from Idaho has sat on this influential board that shapes the eye banking industry around the world.
